TFCD Named State Federation of the Year

July 22nd, 2006

The Tennessee Federation of College Democrats (TFCD) was named state federation of the year at the College Democrats of America (CDA) national convention Saturday.

“We are really honored to be named federation of the year by CDA,” said Christy Holden, TFCD president.  “We’ve worked really hard over the past year and still have big plans for the College Democrats in Tennessee.”

“We’re nowhere near finished yet.”

“The group from Tennessee has come a long way since I first became president of CDA,” said Grant Woodard, outgoing CDA president.  “It is amazing how they went from a small, unorganized federation to a powerhouse within the CDA in just over a year.”

“Tennessee has really set the bar high for other federations.”

Tennessee was represented at the convention by 26 students from 14 colleges and universities.  The TFCD had the third largest number of votes to cast in the CDA elections, with Arkansas being first and Pennsylvania being second.  The southern states attended the convention in such high numbers that they controlled 38 percent of total votes.

The TFCD also took the lead in forming the new CDA Southern Caucus that was officially approved at the convention this week.  The purpose of the Southern Caucus is to organize the southern region of the United States in an effort to build a permanent College Democrats infrastructure.  Alex Youn, TFCD vice president, is the interim chair of the Southern Caucus.

A total of 556 students attended the CDA national convention, held from July 20-23 in St. Louis, Mo., representing more than 250 schools from 45 states.
